Bless Her Dead Little Heart by Miranda James
(Berkley, 2014, 304 pages)
Bless Her Dead Little Heart by Miranda James is the first book in the A Southern Ladies Mystery series. The main characters are two Southern ladies in their 80s, An’gel and Dickce Ducote. They are rich and live on an estate in Mississippi. One of their former sorority sisters, Rosabelle, unexpectedly appears at their door. Rosabelle has come from California to escape from her family hoping that the Ducote sisters will offer her temporary refuge. Rosabelle is convinced that one of her family members is trying to murder her for her money. Soon after Rosabelle arrives, the rest of her family appears on the Ducote doorsteps, including two sisters, a brother, a sister-in-law, a niece, and two nephews. And shortly after that, the first murder occurs. An’gel and Dickce set to work trying to solve a murder.
An’gel and Dickce Ducote are spin-off characters from the A Cat in The Stacks series by Miranda James. In this novel, the sisters are watching, Diesel, the Maine Coon cat, who is also a regular in the A Cat in the Stacks series. The second book in the A Southern Ladies Mystery entitled Dead with the Wind is due out at the end of September.
Bless Her Dead Little Heart is just okay. Most of Rosabelle’s family is so annoying and obnoxious that I wasn’t really sorry to see one (or more) of them die. The Ducote sisters are interesting so I’m hoping that the next book in the series will be an improvement.
