If I Stay by Gayle Forman
(Dutton Books for Young Readers, 2009, 201 pages)
You might be familiar with this title because it was made into a movie with Chloe Grace Moretz released in August 2014. It fit right in with the ever-popular genre of young adult tearjerkers. It was quickly followed up with book 2, Where She Went – a book I’ll probably be picking up in the future.
17 year old Mia is something of a viola prodigy who lives with her family in a small Oregon town. Her life changes drastically one day when a car accident leaves her severely injured and in a coma. Mia “exists” outside her body and she’s able to see what’s going on as she lies in the hospital. Visits from her best friend and her boyfriend remind her of what there is to live for but she still has to reflect on what her life would be like if she were to make the choice to stay instead of letting go…
I’d recommend this to YA fans who enjoy books like The Fault in Our Stars.
