Calling Dr. Laura

Calling Dr. Laura: A Graphic Memoir by Nicole J. Georges
(Mariner Books, 2013, 288 pages)

This graphic memoir recounts Georges experiences as she tries to unravel her past while at the same time coming out to her mother. Georges has been told her whole life that her father died of colon cancer when she was young. But when a friend takes her to a palm reader for her birthday she is told that her biological father is definitely still alive. This is obviously taken with a grain of salt, but the author can’t help but feel this information nagging at her.

As she tries to figure out what she’s going to do we also see a romantic relationship progress and note how this impacts the decisions Georges makes. If you’re a graphic novel fan and are interested in coming out stories/familial “drama” you might enjoy this title. Comparisons have been made between this title and Alison Bechdel’s “Fun Home.”
