Unbreakable by Kami Garcia
(Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2013, 305 pages)
A lot of young adult/teen librarians were talking about this title and it had been a while since I’d picked up a young adult book so I grabbed Unbreakable from the library. The author of this book is one half of the writing duo that brought us the Beautiful Creatures series. She did a great job keeping my interest and maintaining the suspenseful/what’s-going-to-happen-next element. With short chapters it was easy to get caught up in the story and just keep reading. I was actually surprised at how quickly I read the whole thing.
Our teenage heroine, Kennedy, has come home to find her mother dead. While her death looks like an accident, the truth is that she was killed by a ghost (hold on, the description doesn’t do the story justice). Kennedy was almost killed by this same spirit when she was saved by twin brothers, Jared and Lucas. They gradually reveal to her that they are descendants of a secret society that was formed to vanquish malevolent spirits. Along with two others, Kennedy potentially makes the fifth member of this specialized group. The group of teens is now on a mission to try and put an end to the demon who is responsible for the deaths of the five preceding society members. But putting a stop to him won’t be easy because he has control over vengeful spirits at every turn.
This is the first book of a new series and I definitely think young adults would enjoy it. There’s a thriller/suspense element, paranormal activity (in the real sense, not the Disney-fied version), romance (which isn’t overpowering), and the bonus of a series to keep the story going. I enjoyed Unbreakable – I’m glad I picked it up.
