Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson
(HarperTeen, 2006, 368 pages)
Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson is a coming of age story. It is the story of three teenage girls growing up in Georgia. Murphy, Birdie, and Leeda spend the summer together on a struggling peach orchard owned by Birdie’s father. Murphy is a bright, tough 16 year old who lives in a trailer park. Birdie is the peach orchard owner’s daughter. Leeda is Birdie’s wealthy cousin. The three girls learn to like each other and share their struggles in life and love.
Peaches is the first of the trilogy featuring Murphy, Birdie, and Leeda. The Secrets of Peaches is the second book. Love and Peaches concludes the trilogy. I am putting the 2nd and 3rd books on my reading list.
I really enjoyed the little vignettes between some of the chapters that gave insight into the lives of the characters in Peaches. The vignettes were a good way of quickly summarizing information that the reader might want to know. Although Peaches target audience is young, female teenagers, it can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a quick, light read.
